Alemtsehay Gebru has 10 years of experience working in human rights. She has served in non-profit organizations, in private schools, and for the United Nations as a counselor, trainer, and protection consultant, respectively. Recently, she worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees as a protection monitoring consultant. She helps internally displaced persons by identifying survivors of human rights violations, including gender-based violence and child abuse; by documenting alleged violations; and by referring cases to law enforcement or other agencies at the request and with the consent of the survivor. She has also trained and sensitized government employees and the community on protection issues, including peacebuilding and reconciliation. Previously, Alemtsehay worked as a psychosocial program coordinator for Jesuit Refugee Service. Alemtsehay has a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Mizan-Tepi University in Ethiopia. She has contributed greatly to the lives of orphaned children by assessing child protection cases, counseling children, and providing capacity-building training to caregivers. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, she will continue assisting people in need and making a difference in their lives by providing professional help.
